You are driving north on a four-lane divided highway with a grass median. On the southbound side, a school bus stops with its red lights flashing. What must you do?
A travels north on the right side of a four-lane divided highway. Across the grass median, school bus B faces south and is stopped with its red warning lamps flashing. A north arrow clarifies the directions.
Correct answer: Stop before you reach the bus, even though it is on the far side of the median.
Why
Many drivers think a median removes the duty to stop, but New York's rule covers two-lane roads, multi-lane highways and divided highways. Stay stopped until the bus moves or the bus driver or a police officer signals you to go. Even when the bus driver waves you on, keep a slow speed and watch for a child who may still be crossing.
