Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You enter an interstate acceleration lane at 30 mph. Traffic in the right lane of the interstate moves at about 65 mph, and the speed limit is 70 mph. How should you use the acceleration lane?
A is in an acceleration lane beside two interstate through lanes. B and C travel right with an open gap between them; the card states that A enters at 30 mph, traffic moves at about 65 mph and the limit is 70 mph.
Correct answer: Speed up in the lane to about 65 mph, then merge into a safe gap in traffic.
Why
When your speed matches the traffic, a small gap is enough, and the drivers already on the interstate do not have to brake for you. Look for your gap early, while you speed up, and signal your move. The handbook adds that on an interstate you should follow the flow of traffic when you can do so without speeding.
