Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are near the end of an interstate acceleration lane. A pickup truck in the right lane of the interstate is beside you, and its driver does not slow down or move over. Under North Carolina law, who must yield?
A is near the tapered end of the acceleration lane. Silver pickup B travels beside A in the nearest interstate lane; the card states that B does not slow down or change lanes.
Correct answer: You must yield, and merge behind or ahead of the truck when a safe gap opens.
Why
Drivers on the interstate move fast and cannot always change speed or lanes for you. That is why state law puts the duty to yield on the entering driver, and why the handbook tells you to decide in advance where you will enter. Watch the traffic early in the acceleration lane, so that you can adjust your speed and find a gap before the lane ends.
