Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at 65 mph in the right lane of an interstate. Your exit is 1 mile ahead, and a sign shows an exit ramp speed of 35 mph. How should you leave the interstate?
An exit-area preview shows A in the right through lane before a separate deceleration lane branches away; B follows in the through lane. The card states the trip facts: A is traveling at 65 mph, the exit is 1 mile ahead and the ramp speed is 35 mph.
Correct answer: Signal early, enter the deceleration lane at speed, and then slow down in it.
Why
Traffic in the through lanes of an interstate expects a steady speed, so a sudden slowdown in the lane can cause a rear-end crash. The deceleration lane gives you room to slow down away from that traffic. Decide on your exit before you reach it, so that you are already in the right lane and do not need a late lane change.
