You drive in the right lane of a four-lane street with two lanes in each direction. You notice that you need to turn left at the intersection just ahead, but the left lane is full of cars. What should you do?
A is in the right lane of a four-lane street with two lanes in each direction. Cars B and C fill the adjacent left lane as A approaches the intersection where it intended to turn left.
Correct answer: Go on to a later intersection and turn left there from the proper lane
Why
Last-second turns from the wrong lane are a common cause of side-impact crashes. Plan your turns early: look ahead, find your street, and move into the correct lane in good time with a signal and a blind-spot check. Under North Carolina law, a left turn must also end in a lane that is lawful for your direction on the new road.
