Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive down an interstate entrance ramp that has a ramp meter signal. The signal is dark and shows neither red nor green. What should you do?
A approaches a two-lamp ramp meter on an interstate entrance ramp. Both lamps are dark, shown in an enlarged detail; B and C travel in the nearest through lane with a clear gap between them.
Correct answer: Go on without a stop, and merge or yield to interstate traffic as usual
Why
Ramp meters control how quickly vehicles enter a busy freeway, to keep traffic moving. On a steady red, stop at the meter and wait; on a steady green, go down the ramp and merge. Use the acceleration lane to reach the speed of traffic before you merge. Do not confuse a dark ramp meter with a dark traffic signal at an intersection, which you must treat like an all-way stop.
