Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You come up behind a bicyclist on a two-lane road where passing is allowed. A car approaches in the opposing lane. What should you do?
A follows bicyclist B on a two-lane road with a broken yellow center line. Car C approaches in the opposing lane, leaving no clear lane for A to pass B.
Correct answer: Slow down behind the rider, then change lanes to pass when the opposing lane is clear.
Why
A bicycle can move sideways without warning to avoid glass, a pothole or a gust of wind, and the air pushed by a passing car can upset the rider's balance. A short wait behind the rider costs only a few seconds and removes the risk of a squeeze between the bicycle and an oncoming car. The normal passing laws, G.S. 20-149 and 20-150, apply when you pass a bicycle.
