Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive on a two-lane road in a zone where passing is allowed. A moped rides at the right side of your lane, and the opposing lane is clear. What is the least side distance that the law requires between your car and the moped as you pass?
A follows moped B, which rides near the right edge of their lane. The two-lane road has a broken yellow center line, and the opposing lane is empty; no passing path or side-distance answer appears yet.
Correct answer: 2 feet
Why
A moped is small and slow, and the air pushed by a passing car can make the rider wobble. The handbook also tells you to give any cyclist enough space that the wind from your car cannot make the rider lose control, so 2 feet is only the minimum. In a marked no-passing zone, G.S. 20-150(e) lets you pass a bicycle or moped only with at least 4 feet of space or with your car fully in the left lane, and only when the rider is not turning left and the other passing rules are met.
