You drive on a highway with a posted speed limit of 55 mph and plan to turn right onto a side road. Under North Carolina law, when must your turn signal be on?
A approaches a side road on the right of a two-way highway. The card states a posted limit of 55 mph. A separate enlarged detail identifies the small blue car in the scaled overview; no signal distance is marked yet.
Correct answer: For at least the last 200 feet before the turn
Why
At higher speeds, drivers behind you cover distance quickly and need more warning before you slow down and turn. The handbook adds that the faster you drive, the farther ahead you should signal. At night a signal lamp is easier to see than a hand signal, but in low morning or evening sun the lamps can be hard to see, so use the signal that communicates best.
