You drive in the left lane of a street with two lanes in your direction. As you come to an intersection with no signal, the car in the right lane stops at the crosswalk. You cannot see why it stopped. What should you do?
A approaches in the left lane of a street with two lanes in its direction. B has stopped in the right lane before the crosswalk at an intersection with no signal; no pedestrian is visible in front of B.
Correct answer: Slow down and be ready to stop, and do not pass the car, since a pedestrian may be in front of it.
Why
Pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks have the right-of-way, and you must yield when a pedestrian is in your lane. A child can be fully hidden by the stopped car until the last moment. Also watch for a pedestrian with a white cane or a guide dog, and stop behind the crosswalk so that the person has a clear path.
