At 2 a.m., you want to go straight through an intersection. The signal shows this steady red light, and no other traffic is in sight. What must you do?
At 2 a.m., A approaches an empty intersection from more than two car lengths behind the white stop line. The red signal remains lit; a crosswalk lies beyond the line.
Correct answer: Stop at the stop line, and wait there until the light turns green
Why
When the light turns green, pause and look both ways before you move, because other drivers may not obey their signal. If the signal is dark, for example after a power failure, treat the intersection like a stop sign. A stop behind the line also keeps the crosswalk clear for people on foot.
