You approach a stop sign. On the pavement there is a white stop line, then a marked crosswalk, then the cross street. Where does Ohio law require you to stop?
A approaches a STOP sign from well behind the white stop line. The marked crosswalk and crossing street lie farther ahead, in that order.
Correct answer: At the white stop line, before the front of your car crosses it.
Why
Ohio law gives an order of stop points at a stop sign: the marked stop line first; if there is no line, before the crosswalk; if there is neither, at the point nearest the cross street where you can see approaching traffic (ORC 4511.43). If parked cars or bushes block your view after you stop at the line, edge forward slowly, yield to pedestrians, and look again before you enter the intersection. A stop past the line puts your car in the path of people on foot.
