Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You drive at 65 mph in the right lane of a freeway. Your exit is ahead, and it has a deceleration lane with a posted speed of 35 mph. Where should you do most of your slowing?
A travels in the right freeway lane ahead of B. A separate deceleration lane opens beside the through lane and branches into the exit; the card states A’s speed of 65 mph and the posted exit-lane speed of 35 mph.
Correct answer: In the deceleration lane, after you signal and move out of the freeway lane
Why
Traffic behind you on a freeway expects you to keep moving at its speed, so a sudden drop in speed in a through lane invites a rear-end crash. The deceleration lane gives you space to slow down out of the traffic flow. Plan ahead and move to the lane nearest your exit early, so that you do not need a quick lane change.
