Passing target: 75% (30/40)
You drive onto a freeway entrance ramp. Traffic on the freeway moves at about 65 mph, and the acceleration lane is long. How should you use the acceleration lane?
A travels along a long freeway acceleration lane beside an open gap between cars B and C. The card states that the freeway traffic moves at about 65 mph; A’s speed is not given.
Correct answer: Speed up in the lane to about the speed of traffic, then signal and merge into a gap
Why
A merge is safest when your speed is close to the speed of the traffic that you join, because the gap that you choose stays open. Watch the vehicle ahead of you on the ramp as well as the traffic beside you. After you merge, cancel your turn signal.
