Passing target: 80% (16/20)
On a two-lane road with one lane in each direction, you come up behind a bicyclist. The oncoming lane is clear for a long distance. When you pass, how much space must you leave between your car and the rider?
A passing-clearance view shows car A beside bicycle B on a two-lane road, with a broken yellow center line and no oncoming traffic. No clearance number is given in the question image.
Correct answer: 3 feet
Why
A bicycle can wobble or swerve around a pothole or debris, and the wind from a car that passes close can push the rider. Oklahoma law says that on a road with one lane in your direction, you must leave at least 3 feet between any part of your car and the bicycle or rider until you are safely past. On a road with two or more lanes in your direction, the law tells you to move into the lane to the left when that is possible and safe. Do not pass between a rider and oncoming cars; wait until the oncoming lane is clear.
