You follow a bicyclist on a city street in a business district. Which rule applies to the bicyclist while riding on the roadway?
Correct answer: The rider must obey the same traffic signals, signs and lane rules as a driver.
Why
Drivers can predict bicyclists better when both groups follow the same rules. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3501) gives a person who rides on the roadway the rights and duties of a vehicle driver, with some special bicycle rules. For example, a bicyclist may ride on the shoulder but does not have to (3505(b)), and must ride in the same direction as other traffic. Treat a bicyclist as a slow vehicle: expect signals and turns, and give the rider space.
