Passing target: 83.3% (15/18)
You drive on a two-lane road with a double solid yellow center line. A bicyclist rides near the right edge of your lane. The oncoming lane is clear for a long distance. How may you pass?
A follows bicyclist B near the right edge of a two-lane road with double solid yellow center lines. The oncoming lane is empty, and the card states that it is clear for a long distance.
Correct answer: Slow down and pass with at least 4 feet of space, crossing the center line if necessary.
Why
A bicyclist can move to the side to avoid a hole or glass, and the air pushed by a fast car can move the rider. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3303(a)(3)) requires at least 4 feet of space at a careful, reduced speed. Section 3307(b.1) lets you pass a bicyclist in a no-passing zone when you can do it safely. If an oncoming vehicle is near, stay behind the rider, let the vehicle go by, and then pass.
