Passing target: 83.3% (15/18)
On a four-lane road, a motorcyclist rides in the left part of the right lane. There is a lot of open space to the right of the motorcycle. You want to pass. What should you do?
A follows motorcycle B on a four-lane road. B rides in the left part of the right lane, leaving open space to its right; the adjacent same-direction lane is clear.
Correct answer: Change to the left lane, pass as you would pass a car, and return with room to spare.
Why
Motorcyclists often change position in the lane to avoid potholes, gravel or wind from trucks, and to be seen. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3523(a)) gives every motorcycle the full use of a lane and forbids driving in a way that takes that use away. The manual gives mopeds the same full lane. Also watch for motorcycle turn signals that stay on after a turn, and wait until you see the motorcycle actually turn.
