You drive in the center lane of a busy three-lane highway. The cars in both side lanes leave you less than 8 feet of space on each side. What should you do?
Blue A travels in the center of three same-direction lanes, with silver B alongside on the left, silver C alongside on the right and silver D ahead. The card states that A has less than 8 feet of space on either side.
Correct answer: Increase your following distance, because you have no side escape path.
Why
Keep a space cushion on all sides of your car. The space at your sides is your escape path if another vehicle suddenly moves into your lane. Do not drive beside another vehicle for a long time, and keep space between your car and parked cars, where a door can open or a person can step out.
