You come to a STOP sign. A white stop line is painted across your lane, and a marked crosswalk is a few feet past the stop line. Where must the front of your vehicle stop?
A approaches a STOP sign on a road entering an intersection. A separate white stop line crosses A’s lane before a striped crosswalk that spans the approach.
Correct answer: Before the stop line, the first painted line you reach.
Why
Pennsylvania law gives the stopping points in order: a marked stop line; if there is none, before the near crosswalk; if there is neither, at the point nearest the cross street where you can see approaching traffic. If you cannot see after you stop at the line, first yield to any pedestrian, then move forward slowly until you can see. Slowing down without a full stop is illegal.
