You drive on a highway at about 55 mph. How far ahead should you look to find problems early enough to avoid last-second moves?
Correct answer: About 12 to 15 seconds ahead, which is about a quarter mile.
Why
Looking far ahead gives you time to see a lane that ends, stopped traffic or a turning vehicle, and to react early. Do not just stare at the center of the road: keep your eyes moving across the whole road and its sides. At intersections, driveways and ramps, also look left, then right, then left again.
