You stop fully at a STOP sign that has a 4-WAY plate below it. A moment after you stop, a car comes to a stop at the sign on your right. Neither of you has moved yet. Who should go first?
A is stopped on the west approach of a four-way intersection; B is stopped on the south approach, to A’s right. Each approach has a STOP sign with a 4-WAY plate, enlarged in a sign detail, and the card states that A stopped first and B stopped next.
Correct answer: You should go first, because you were the first driver to stop at the intersection.
Why
A 4-WAY or ALL WAY plate under the STOP sign tells you that traffic from every direction must stop. When two drivers who face each other arrive together, both may go, but watch for a driver who turns left across your path. Even when it is your turn, yield to pedestrians and to anyone who is already in the intersection.
