You drive in the left lane of a four-lane street. In the right lane, a car stops at a marked crosswalk in the middle of the block. You cannot see anyone in front of it. What should you do?
A approaches in the left lane of a four-lane street. B is stopped in the right lane before a marked crosswalk in the middle of the block, and no pedestrian is visible.
Correct answer: Slow down and stop, and do not pass the car while it waits at the crosswalk.
Why
On streets with two or more lanes in one direction, a driver who passes a car that is stopped for a pedestrian can hit that pedestrian in the next lane. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3542(c)) does not allow you to overtake and pass a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian. The manual also tells you to slow down and not to pass a stopped vehicle until you are sure that no pedestrian is crossing in front of it.
