You have a green light and start a right turn. A pedestrian with a white cane steps into the street that you are turning onto. The pedestrian signal shows DON'T WALK. What must you do?
A begins a right turn at a green light while pedestrian B steps into the receiving street with a white cane. Enlarged details show the cane and the pedestrian signal’s raised orange hand, labeled DON’T WALK.
Correct answer: Yield to the pedestrian, and stop if necessary, until the person is out of your path.
Why
A blind pedestrian may not know which signal is on or where your car is. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3549) requires you to yield to a blind or partly blind pedestrian with a clearly visible white cane or a guide dog. The manual also tells you to yield to a blind pedestrian who is led by another person. Go on only when the person is safely clear of your path.
