Passing target: 20 correct signs and 20 correct rules
How does SGI suggest checking your judgment of an approaching vehicle's closing time before you start making actual passes?
Correct answer: Stay behind, say safe or unsafe, then count the closing time to check.
Why
SGI suggests practising the safe/unsafe judgment without actually passing. From a safe following position, estimate whether the gap would allow your safe passing time, then check the approaching vehicle's closing time to the safe return point ahead. Compare the estimate with the observed time while staying behind. Keep the minimum five-second margin in your safe passing time; do not remove it to make an otherwise inadequate gap seem usable.
