In SGI's passing-time example, a pass takes 15 seconds. After adding SGI's minimum five-second safety margin, what safe passing time should be used for that example?
Correct answer: 20 seconds.
Why
SGI's calculation is passing time plus safety margin. In this example,15 seconds plus a minimum five-second margin gives 20 seconds. The margin allows for error, such as misjudging how quickly an approaching vehicle is closing. This is an example, not a universal 20-second passing rule. The actual time changes with the vehicles, speed difference, road surface and length of the vehicle being passed.
