Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS). A car ahead stops suddenly, and you must brake as hard as you can. The brake pedal starts to pulse and makes a grinding noise. What should you do?
Neutral close-up of an automatic car brake and accelerator pedals. The card gives the sudden stop and pulsing ABS premise.
Correct answer: Keep firm, steady pressure on the pedal, and steer around the hazard if you need to.
Why
ABS stops the wheels from locking, so the tires keep their grip and you can still steer during a hard stop. The noise and vibration surprise many drivers, but you must keep your foot down. ABS does not let you drive faster or follow closer, so keep a safe space cushion.
