Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You drive at 50 mph on a two-lane road. Your right wheels drift off the pavement onto a loose gravel shoulder. What should you do first?
A is on a two-lane opposing-traffic road at 50 mph with its right wheels on loose gravel.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, grip the wheel firmly, and keep steering straight
Why
Loose gravel gives the tires less grip than pavement, so sudden steering, braking or gas can start a skid. Slow down gradually with the car straight, then steer back onto the pavement when no cars are near you and your speed is low. On rural roads, watch for pavement that changes to gravel or dirt, and slow down before you reach it.
