You drive on a one-way frontage road beside a freeway. Ahead, a car comes down the exit ramp from the freeway and will enter the frontage road. Who must yield?
Blue A travels east on a one-way frontage road. Silver B approaches on a freeway exit ramp that joins the frontage road ahead. Direction arrows mark eastbound freeway and frontage travel.
Correct answer: You, because a frontage-road driver yields to cars entering from the freeway.
Why
Vehicles on the ramps often move at or near freeway speed, and exiting drivers have little room to stop at the end of the ramp. For that reason, Texas law requires frontage-road traffic to yield to vehicles that enter from the freeway and to vehicles that leave the frontage road for an entrance ramp. Watch for ramp junctions ahead, and slow down or change lanes early to make room.
