Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You enter a freeway on a ramp that leads into an acceleration lane. Traffic in the right lane of the freeway moves at about 65 mph. You are at 45 mph, and you see a safe gap coming up in the right lane. What should you do?
Blue A is in an acceleration lane beside a through lane, with silver B and C in the through lane. The card gives A’s 45 mph speed and freeway traffic at about 65 mph, and states that spacing is not to scale.
Correct answer: Signal, speed up to about 65 mph in the lane, and merge into the gap
Why
Vehicles already on the freeway have the right-of-way, so you must fit into the flow, not force it to change. The acceleration lane gives you room to build up speed to match the traffic before you merge. A car that merges much slower than the flow makes the drivers behind it brake hard, which can cause rear-end crashes.
