Correct answer: C. A railroad crossing is ahead; be ready to stop.
Why
This round yellow sign warns that a railroad crossing is ahead. Slow down, look and listen for trains, and be ready to stop. It is an advance warning, placed before the tracks. The white X-shaped Crossbuck sign is different: it stands at the crossing itself, where you must yield to trains.
Why the other answers are not correct
- A. Wrong: a crossroad ahead is shown on a yellow diamond with a plus-shaped symbol, not on a round sign with RR.
- B. Wrong: this sign warns of a crossing that trains may use; tracks out of service are marked by a separate white word sign.
- D. Wrong: on this round yellow sign, RR stands for railroad; rest rooms and other services are shown on blue signs.
