You wait in a left-turn lane at a red arrow. A bicyclist is stopped in front of you in the same lane and signals a left turn. What should you do when the green arrow comes on?
Blue car A waits behind bicyclist B in a left-turn lane. B extends the left arm, also shown in an enlarged detail. The signal detail for A and B shows a red left arrow.
Correct answer: Wait behind the bicyclist and let the rider turn first, as you would for a car
Why
In Utah, a person who rides a bicycle on the roadway has the same rights and duties as the driver of a vehicle. A rider who prepares for a left turn may leave the right edge of the road and use a left-turn lane or a two-way left-turn lane, as a car does. Treat the rider as the vehicle ahead of you: wait your turn and do not squeeze past in the same lane. Riders cannot always signal with a hand, so also watch for head turns and other signs of what the rider will do.
