Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You parallel park on a busy street and want to get out on the traffic side. In your side mirror, you see a bicyclist who comes toward your car in the lane. What should you do?
Blue car A is parallel parked beside the right curb with its doors closed. Bicyclist B approaches from behind on A’s traffic side.
Correct answer: Wait until the rider passes and the lane is clear, then open the door
Why
Utah law does not let you open a vehicle door on the side of moving traffic unless you can do it safely and without interfering with traffic. You also may not leave that door open longer than you need to load or unload passengers. A door that opens into a bicyclist's path can throw the rider into traffic. Before you open the door, check your mirror and look over your shoulder for bicyclists and cars.
