You are halfway through an intersection on a green light when a fire truck with its siren and flashing lights comes up behind you. What should you do?
Blue A is halfway through an intersection. An enlarged signal detail shows green. Fire truck B approaches from behind with lightbar ends lit; the card states its lights and siren are operating.
Correct answer: Clear the intersection, then pull to the right edge of the road and stop
Why
When an emergency vehicle comes near with a siren or flashing lights, Utah law requires you to yield, move as close as possible to the right edge or curb, stay clear of any intersection, and stop until it passes. If you are already in an intersection, drive through it before you pull over, because a car stopped there can block the emergency vehicle. After it passes, look for more emergency vehicles before you move. Do not follow closer than 500 feet behind an emergency vehicle that uses its signals.
