In a construction zone, a sign shows that your lane ends in half a mile. Traffic in both lanes is heavy and slow. What does Utah law require you to do?
Blue A and five silver cars occupy two slow traffic lanes before a taper. The card gives A’s lane end as half a mile ahead, and the overview is explicitly labeled not to scale.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane up to the merge point, and then take turns with the other lane
Why
When two lanes merge into one in slow, heavy traffic, Utah law requires the zipper method: both lanes stay in use up to the merge point, and then drivers take turns, one from each lane. This uses all of the road space and keeps traffic moving more evenly. When traffic is light and moves at speed, merge when there is a safe gap, and yield to vehicles in the lane that continues.
