Thick fog forms on a rural highway in the morning. You can see only about 200 feet ahead, and the speed limit is 65 mph. What should you do?
Blue A faces right on a rural two-way highway. Morning fog grows denser along the road ahead. The card states about 200 feet of visibility and a 65 mph speed limit.
Correct answer: Use your low beams, and slow to a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see
Why
In fog, your speed must match the distance that you can see, not the posted limit. A car ahead can stop suddenly, and a stalled vehicle can appear out of the fog with little warning. Low beams light the road without a bright wall of reflected light. If the fog becomes too thick to drive safely, leave the road at a safe place and wait.
