On a curve with black ice, the rear of your car starts to slide to the left. What should you do?
Blue A is at the shallow opening of a left-hand curve with an icy patch. A white arrow beside the rear curves upward, toward the driver's left. The card states that the rear has started sliding left.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and steer gently to the left, then straighten the wheels when the car grips
Why
The best way to handle a skid is to prevent it: slow down on ice, snow and wet roads before you need to. In Utah, black ice often looks like a wet spot on the road, and bridges and overpasses freeze first. If you steer too far when you correct a skid, the car can slide the other way, so use small, smooth movements.
