Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You tow a small trailer on a freeway that has three lanes in your direction. You drive at a safe speed, but it is below the normal speed of the traffic around you. Which lane should you use?
A blue pickup A and its small gray trailer appear in an inset above a three-lane freeway. All three lane arrows point right. The card states that A travels safely but slower than normal traffic.
Correct answer: The right-hand lane, except to pass or to take a left exit
Why
Keeping slower vehicles in the right lane lets faster traffic pass on the left, which is the normal passing side. Utah law also says a driver may not go so slowly that the driver impedes the normal movement of traffic, unless a lower speed is necessary for safety. On multi-lane roads, the handbook tells drivers to stay in the far-right lane unless they pass or the lane is blocked. Plan a left exit early so that you use the left lane only when you need it.
