Passing target: 80% (40/50)
On a two-lane, two-way road, the center line has two yellow lines. The line next to your lane is solid, and the line next to the oncoming lane is dashed. What do these lines mean?
Blue car A and silver car B face opposite ways on a two-lane road. The yellow center marking is solid beside A and dashed beside B.
Correct answer: You may not cross the lines to pass; drivers going the other way may pass when safe
Why
Yellow center lines separate traffic that moves in opposite directions. When a solid line and a dashed line are side by side, read the line that is nearest to your lane. Utah law does not let a driver go to the left of a line that marks a no-passing zone, with a few exceptions: to turn left into or out of a driveway, alley or private road, to go around an obstruction, or to pass a slow bicycle or moped when it is safe. In each of these cases, yield to oncoming traffic that is close.
