The speed limit sign says 45 mph. Snow is falling, the road is slick, and you can see only a short distance ahead. What speed does Utah law require?
Blue A travels along a snowy two-way road. Snowfall and pale haze obscure the road ahead. An enlarged official speed-limit sign reads 45. The card describes a slick road and a short view.
Correct answer: A speed below 45 mph that is safe for the snow and the short view
Why
The posted speed limit is the highest speed for good conditions. Utah's basic speed law says you must not drive faster than is reasonable and prudent for the conditions that exist. The Utah handbook warns that even 10 mph can be too fast on an icy road. Slow down enough to keep control and to stop within the distance that you can see.
