Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You follow a car at 55 mph on a dry highway. The car passes a road sign. You start to count, and your front bumper reaches the same sign when you say "one thousand one." What does this tell you?
Blue A follows silver B on a dry two-way highway. A’s front is level with the back of a roadside sign. A bracket gives the stated one-second gap at 55 mph.
Correct answer: You are too close; drop back until at least two seconds pass
Why
To measure your following time, pick a fixed object that the vehicle ahead passes, and count the seconds until you reach it. Utah law requires at least two seconds, except in congested traffic that moves at less than 35 mph and in funeral processions. Two seconds is the minimum for good conditions; add more time in bad weather or poor visibility.
