On a wet road, the traffic ahead of you stops suddenly, and you must brake hard. Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS). What should you do?
Correct answer: Press the brake firmly with steady pressure and steer as needed, even if the pedal vibrates.
Why
Anti-lock brakes keep the wheels from locking during a hard stop, so you keep steering control. An ABS warning light comes on for a short time when you start the car. If it stays on while you drive, the ABS does not work, but the normal brakes still do. Your owner's manual tells you whether your car has ABS.
