At noon, thick fog lets you see only about 300 feet down the road. Which lights should you use?
Blue car A is on a road in thick daytime fog at noon. The road fades into fog ahead, with no selected headlight beam shown.
Correct answer: Low-beam headlights, because high beams reflect off the fog and cut your view.
Why
Fog, heavy rain and heavy snow can cut your view even in the middle of the day. Vermont law requires lighted lamps when you cannot clearly see people or vehicles 500 feet ahead, and the manual says to use low beams in these conditions. Daytime running lights are not headlights, so turn the headlights on yourself. Slow down so that you can stop within the distance that you can see.
