After a storm, a barricade and a sign stand at the start of a bridge on your usual route. The sign says the bridge is closed, but the bridge looks fine to you. What should you do?
Correct answer: Turn back and follow the detour signs or take another route.
Why
Floods can wash out or weaken bridges, culverts and road beds in ways that you cannot see from the road. Vermont law forbids driving over a highway that has a barrier or a sign that says it is closed, and since July 1, 2026, using a bridge in violation of its posting or closure is also a traffic violation. Obey detour signs and never drive around traffic barricades.
