You drive on a four-lane divided highway toward a posted work zone. The crew works on the right shoulder, and the left lane beside you is clear. What does Vermont law require as you approach?
Blue car A approaches a posted work zone in the right lane of a divided four-lane highway. Workers stand on the right shoulder and the lane to A’s left is clear.
Correct answer: Slow to a safe speed and, if it is safe, move to the left lane before you reach the crew.
Why
Most work-zone crashes are rear-end crashes caused by speed and short following distances, and many happen before the work area, where traffic slows or merges. Choose your lane early, while you approach, and then keep that lane through the zone; the manual asks you not to change lanes inside the zone. Keep a following distance of about 4 seconds, and give workers and their equipment as much room as you can.
