A school bus ahead of you on a two-lane road turns on its alternately flashing yellow lights and begins to slow down. What should you do?
Blue A follows a westbound yellow school bus on a two-lane road. An enlarged lamp detail shows the bus’s amber warning lamps; its red warning lamps are unlit.
Correct answer: Slow down and get ready to stop, because the red lights will come on next.
Why
Before a school bus stops to pick up or drop off students, the driver turns on the alternately flashing yellow lights and slows down, which warns you to prepare to stop. When the bus stops and the alternately flashing red lights come on, Vermont law requires drivers meeting or following the bus to stop and stay stopped while the red lights flash. The only exceptions are for a bus on a different roadway of a divided highway and certain controlled-access loading zones.
