A flagger stands at a one-lane section of a work zone and holds a STOP paddle toward you. You can see that no traffic is coming through the open lane. What should you do?
Blue car A approaches a flagger holding a STOP paddle. Cones close one lane while the remaining lane is empty. An inset enlarges the same STOP paddle.
Correct answer: Stop and stay stopped until the flagger turns the paddle to SLOW or waves you ahead.
Why
In a work zone, traffic often has to stop so that equipment can move or so that one open lane can serve both directions. Flaggers control this with STOP/SLOW paddles or orange flags. When the paddle turns to SLOW, drive slowly through the zone and watch for workers, equipment, cones and drums.
