Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You are in the right lane of two left-turn lanes. The street that you turn onto has two lanes going your way. Your destination is on the left side of that street, one block after the turn. How should you make the turn?
A is in the right of two marked left-turn lanes; silver B is in the adjacent left-turn lane. The receiving street has two lanes in that direction. No guide line or vehicle path crosses the junction.
Correct answer: Turn into the right lane, finish the turn, then signal and change lanes when safe.
Why
When two lanes turn in the same direction, each turning lane must stay in its own path from the start to the end of the turn. A lane change in the middle of a turn is illegal and a common cause of crashes, because another car is turning just beside you. Complete the turn in your lane, then check your mirrors and blind spot, signal and change lanes. Drivers must also follow the direction that the arrows show for the lane they are in.
