Passing target: 80% (16/20)
On a two-lane road, you stop to turn left and must wait for oncoming traffic to clear. How should your car be placed while you wait?
A faces north and waits upstream in its lane while silver B travels south through the intersection. No close centerline alignment or clearance bracket selects the answer.
Correct answer: Within about one foot of the center line, with your front wheels kept straight.
Why
Before a left turn on a two-way road, move to within about one foot of the center line if it is safe, and stay on your side of it. Keep your front wheels straight until the way is clear and you start to turn; a crash from behind then pushes you straight ahead, not into oncoming traffic. When you turn, enter the new street just to the right of its center line. Vermont law requires this approach near the center line and a turn that ends on the right side of the new road.
