You are in the right lane of a highway with two lanes going your way. Orange signs show that your lane will close ahead for road work, and no sign tells you where to merge. What should you do?
A is in the right of two lanes going right. Cones taper across that lane ahead and an orange RIGHT LANE CLOSED AHEAD sign stands above the scene.
Correct answer: Signal and move into the open lane as soon as it is safe, well before the lane ends.
Why
Many work-zone crashes happen before the work area, where drivers slow down and merge, and most of them are rear-end crashes caused by speed and short following distances. The manual tells you to merge as the signs direct, as soon as it is safe, and not to change lanes inside the work zone. Slow to the posted speed, keep at least a four-second following distance, and give workers and their equipment as much room as you can.
